So what is the best advice I can recommend to someone who wants to be efficient or is traveling soon?  While there is no definitive "one size fits all" answer, there are a few commonly held directives.

2) Use Credit:  Your credit cards and your ATM card are your best friends in the Philippines when it comes to money.  It is best to limit the amount of money that you carry around with you seeing as you are in a large city where the same 'rules' apply.  For you Visa ATM holders, your card is honored at Equitable Bank locations that are common in the urban areas.  The ATM fee is P75 or $1.50 as of this writing.  Mastercard friendly machines are typically available at IBC Bank.  Credit cards are generally taken at most city businesses and they are scrutinized for I.D.  I have yet to hear of anyone who has lost their credit card and had to later file a fraud claim when they received their bill.  If you lose your card you obviously need to cancel it.  But chances are the person who found it simply considers it to be a "cool souvenir".

Before you leave, it is wise to notify your credit card company of your trip, so they do not inadvertently cancel your card due to the fear of fraud.  You should also carry $20 in U.S. funds as your emergency money.  If anything, you can use it to pay the $15 airport fee when you leave the P.I.  More than one person I know has spent most of their Pesos during their last night, and found themselves scrambling to find an ATM to pay the airport fee as they didn't know of its existence.
