Travel to the Philippines is always an interesting endeavor.  For those who have been to the Islands, this info is probably nothing new.  But to those who have never been there, it is worth your time.  

The Philippines, while tropical and conservative, it is still a third world nation.  With this third world status comes the typical corruption and danger to those who make themselves vulnerable to it.  Many people, especially filipinos, tend to exaggerate the dangers of travel to the Philippines.  They make it seem like you will get mugged at least twice a day if you are not killed or kidnapped within your first week.  If you ask these people if they have personally witnessed violence they will say "no, but I have heard...."  Basically a friend of a friend of a friend had their wallet stolen.....

Now I must throw the B.S. flag every time I hear someone exaggerate to this degree.  Now I'm not denying how the Philippines can be dangerous to someone who has zero street smarts.  In fact, it can be very dangerous to a nervous looking and feeble foreigner.  But this is a guy that will get jumped in any major city around the world, be it in the U.S., Europe, or the Philippines if he leaves himself weak and exposed.  Basically if you look or act like a victim, chances are that you will be one very soon.  

Back in Chicago when I was in college, I lived literally across the street from the Robert Taylor Homes.  These were/are some of the worst public housing projects in the state, if not the world when it came to crime.  But three years passed without my experiencing of any significant problems from the people in the area.  Maybe it was because I was not afraid of the people who lived there?  Maybe they sensed my confidence and left me alone?  This is in contrast to my roommate who was harassed and followed almost every day.  Granted he was a little guy, but he looked scared when he walked through the 'hood....thus he was asking to be a victim, or pretty damn close.
