Taxi Information:

If you are a Filipino or at least look like you are Filipino, the following will probably will not apply to you, unless you make it clear by your actions that you are not a Philippine National.  But this information will be good for you to know to pass on to anyone who is looking to travel in the future.  

To someone looking for a taxi, you will always have to be prepared for a confrontation, that is, unless you do not mind paying a rate that is at least 4 times the fair market rate.  Unless you have a car waiting for you at the airport, this first taste of negotiation will be had immediately.  Basically upon stepping out of the airport terminal, you will hear "Taxi sir?" about 10 times in the first 60 seconds of your arrival on the streets below.  Take a moment to look around and you will notice that of all of the people that exit the terminal at the same time as you do, you are likely the individual who garners all of the attention.  For example, on one trip, I met a retired American dentist who was originally born in the Philippines.  This nice elderly man and his wife, also a dentist, obviously were far wealthier than I.  In fact, I was carrying their large and heavy boxes.  Any observer at that moment would say how I could have easily been a bodyguard or some sort of caregiver to this elderly couple.  But the sight of my white skin sent them into a frenzy as they all began shouting at me, offering taxi services while ignoring my older friends.  We all laughed about it at the time since I was getting a ride from the dentist couple to my hotel.  But if they had not been there, I would have likely been told I would have to pay the standard rate of P500 (500 Pesos) for a trip that normally would cost P100 if given the meter rate.
