Taxi Information cont':
My
personal strategy is to make sure that you have a girl with you at all times.
It is best to thoroughly brief her how the cab drivers try to take advantage of
foreigners, and then let her do her thing. Filipinas are very good at
bartering, and will not allow a taxi driver to pull a scam. One night I
was at Hard Rock Cafe and met a girl who was home for Easter after working in
Hong Kong. She was very tall for a Filipina at 5'8" and was extremely
beautiful and sweet in her demeanor, a girl you could not visualize becoming
aggressive. Upon bar closing we got a taxi, and as we began to pull away
from the curb, the driver said "250" to me. The girl went from
highly sweet to highly ballistic when she realized how the cab driver was taking
advantage of us, as the fare should have been P70. The driver immediately
reached down to hit the meter button and profusely apologized for the
misunderstanding. My sadistic side always gets a kick out of seeing the
power of the Filipina in these situations. Bottom
line: It is only to your advantage to develop your bartering skills in a country like the Philippines. Throughout the course of a couple of weeks, it will easily save you hundreds of dollars. And for those of you who think that the people will see you as “generous” if you pay full price, you can forget that right now. To pay full price makes you look like an ignorant and gullible fool to shrewd salespeople. To make a salesman work is to gain his respect. If you are "easy money", you are often taken for granted, and next time, they will attempt to charge even more money which hurts all travelers. Salespeople in this case include, but are not limited to, cab drivers, hotel representatives, and basically any privately owned storefront that does not clearly post its prices. If prices are not posted, there is a good chance that there are two rates available: “Filipino rate” and “Foreigner rate”. Again, the Foreigner rate is anywhere from 30% to 500% more expensive than local market value. Finally every time you fall victim to their tactics, it only empowers these salespeople to continue their abusive tactics. Fortunately, there is hope in that the government is at least beginning to realize the vital importance of the tourism industry to the overall continued growth of their Republic.
